Getting Started

First time here? Start with the basics.

What is the Big Sister Foundation platform?

The Big Sister Foundation (BSF) platform is a website where you can see exactly how the foundation works — where money goes, which children are being supported, what ideas the community has, and how you can get involved. Everything is transparent and open.

The platform has 13 pages:

Homepage

The front door to the foundation. Our story and mission.

Understanding the homepage and the tree animation

The homepage tells the story of the Big Sister Foundation through marketing content and an animated tree that grows as you scroll down the page. The tree serves as a metaphor for growth and impact.

🌱
Scroll to grow the tree
🌱 🌲 🌳 🌴 🌵
Seeds → Sprout → Trunk → Branches → Canopy
Donate Volunteer Explore
  1. Watch the tree grow

As you scroll down the homepage, an animated tree grows from seeds into a full canopy. Each stage represents the foundation's growth: seeds (potential), sprout (early support), trunk (stability), branches (expanding reach), and canopy (full impact). Just scroll at your own pace and watch it unfold.

  2. Read about the mission

The page tells the story of BSF: who we are, what we do, and the children we support. Scroll through each section to learn more.

  3. Take action with the CTA buttons

The homepage has prominent call-to-action buttons: Donate takes you to the payment page, Volunteer takes you to the application, and Explore lets you browse the rest of the platform.

Ideas Board

  1. Go to the Ledger page

Click "Ledger" in the navigation bar.

  2. View the Sankey flow diagram

At the top of the page, a Sankey diagram visually shows money flowing from income sources on the left (Donations, Grants, Fundraisers) to expense categories on the right (School Fees, Food, Healthcare, Events, Reserves). Follow the flowing coloured lines to understand where money comes from and where it goes.

  3. Browse the transaction table

Below the diagram, entries are grouped by month. Each entry shows the date, fund category, income or expense type, a description, the amount, and who added it. Green amounts are money coming in. Orange amounts are money going out.

  4. Filter by type

Use the tabs at the top: "All Transactions" shows everything, "Money In" shows only income (donations, grants, fundraisers), "Money Out" shows only expenses.

🔗 Donations auto-appear here. When someone donates via the Give page (Paystack), their transaction is automatically recorded on this public ledger. No manual entry needed.
🔒 Radical transparency: The ledger is public by design. BSF believes you should be able to see exactly how every naira is used.
How to add a ledger entry (volunteers)

Signed-in volunteers can record financial transactions to keep the ledger up to date.

  1. Sign in on the Ledger page

Click "Volunteer Sign In" and enter your email and password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions.

Is the platform free to use?
Yes, completely free. There are no fees, subscriptions, or hidden costs. The platform is built and maintained by volunteers.
How do I donate to BSF?
Go to the Give page. Choose a fund category (School Fees, Food, Healthcare, Events, or Reserves), enter an amount in naira, and pay via Paystack using card, bank transfer, or USSD. No account needed. Your donation is automatically recorded on the public ledger.
Where does my donation go?
Your donation goes to the specific fund category you choose during payment. You can verify this on the public ledger, which shows every transaction. The Sankey diagram visually shows how money flows from sources to expense categories.
Can I get a receipt for my donation?
Yes. After a successful payment, a receipt is automatically generated with a reference number. You can also visit the Donations Tracker to view, print, download as PDF, or share your receipt via email.
What payment methods are supported?
Online donations through the Give page are processed via Paystack and support card payments, bank transfers, and USSD. For offline donations (cash, checks), the BSF team can log them manually through the Donations Tracker page.
Can I volunteer from outside Lagos?
Yes! While in-person volunteering happens in Lagos, you can contribute remotely — tutoring online, helping with the platform, fundraising, social media, or mentoring. Apply through the Volunteer page and mention your location.
What is expected of volunteers?
BSF expects volunteers to: commit to 4 hours per month minimum, never post photos of children on social media, listen before you lead, report any safeguarding concerns immediately, and communicate — don't disappear. If your availability changes, let the team know.
What happens after I submit a volunteer application?
Your application goes to the Admin Dashboard for review. An admin will evaluate your motivation, skills, and availability, then approve or reject it. If approved, you'll get access to the Volunteer Registration page with onboarding steps: join the email list, attend orientation, read the volunteer guide, and attend your first session.
Why can't I see a child's full name?
To protect the children's privacy, we only display first names and last initials (e.g., "Amina K."). Full names are kept confidential and only accessible to authorized BSF staff. This is a core child protection measure.
Is the financial data real?
Yes. The ledger reflects actual transactions. BSF is committed to radical financial transparency — every naira in or out is recorded and publicly visible. Online donations via Paystack are automatically recorded. The Sankey diagram provides a visual summary of all financial flows.
Do I need an account to post on the forums?
No. The forums are completely open. Just enter your name and start posting. Your name and email (if provided) are saved in your browser for convenience. No sign-up or login required.
Why did my vote disappear when I switched devices?
Votes on ideas and forum threads are stored in your browser's localStorage. They persist on the same device and browser but don't sync across devices. If you switch to a different device, you'll be able to vote again.
How do I report something inappropriate on the forums?
Contact the BSF team directly via email with details. The team can remove inappropriate content from the admin dashboard. All moderation actions are tracked in the audit log.
Can I become a monthly sponsor instead of a one-time donor?
Yes! Visit the Sponsor page to learn about recurring sponsorship. Monthly sponsors provide consistent funding that helps BSF plan ahead. You'll be connected to specific scholars and can track impact through their profiles.
How can I nominate a child for BSF support?
External nominations are welcome. Contact the BSF team via email with the family's details. The team visits every family before enrollment to understand their situation and needs.
What is the admin audit log?
The audit log is a permanent, uneditable record of every create, edit, and delete action performed across the entire platform. It tracks who did what, when, and on which record. This ensures complete accountability for all changes to scholars, ledger entries, ideas, and volunteer decisions.
Can I export data from the platform?
Admins can export ledger data and donation records to CSV files from the admin dashboard. This is useful for accounting, reporting, and auditing. Regular users and volunteers do not have export access.
I'm having trouble with the website. Who do I contact?

What are the sponsorship tiers?
BSF has four monthly sponsorship tiers: Seedling (₦2,000–₦9,999/mo), Grower (₦10,000–₦24,999/mo), Elder (₦25,000–₦49,999/mo), and Baobab (₦50,000+/mo). Each tier unlocks additional perks like impact reports, scholar profiles, and annual certificates. Visit the Sponsor page to compare tiers and see what your giving supports.
How is sponsorship different from a one-time donation?
One-time donations through the Give page go to a specific fund category you choose. Sponsorship is a recurring monthly commitment — it gives BSF predictable funding to plan ahead, and you get a personal Sponsor Dashboard to track your total impact, view transaction history, download receipts, and earn achievement badges.
What can I do in my sponsor dashboard?
Your Sponsor Dashboard shows your total donations, giving streak, and impact equivalents (e.g., how many school months or meals your giving has funded). You can view and filter your full transaction history, download individual receipts or export all transactions to CSV, earn milestone badges, and generate an annual impact certificate. You can also update your profile, change your recurring amount, or select a preferred program.
How does the Ideas Board work?
The Ideas Board lets anyone propose ideas for BSF programs. Each idea can be voted on by the community. Ideas go through four statuses: Open, Planned, In Progress, and Completed. When an idea reaches 30+ votes, it becomes eligible to be converted into a funded Goal with a target budget and deadline. Ideas are organized by pathway (General, Gifted & Talented, Special Needs, Difficult Backgrounds).
What's the difference between ideas and goals?
Ideas are community proposals — anyone can submit and vote on them. Goals are ideas that have been approved and given a funding target and deadline. Switch between the "Ideas" and "Goals" tabs on the Ideas Board to see both. Goals show a progress bar toward their funding target.
How do I find or attend BSF events?
Visit the Events page to see upcoming outreach visits, fundraisers, workshops, and meetings. You can browse by calendar or list view, and filter by event type. Each event shows the date, time, location (or Zoom link for virtual events), and capacity. Volunteers and admins can also create new events.
How does the blog work? Can I write posts?
The Blog features stories, updates, insights, and guides from the BSF community. Anyone can browse and read posts. If you're a registered volunteer, you can sign in and submit new posts — they go through a review process before being published. You can filter by category or search by keyword.
What is the volunteer portal?
The Volunteer Portal is a private dashboard for active volunteers. After signing in, you can see your team assignment, upcoming schedule, announcements, and quick stats on your volunteer activity. It's separate from the public volunteer application page.
Does BSF have anti-spam protection?
Yes. All forms across the site — including volunteer applications, forum posts, idea submissions, event creation, and contact forms — have built-in anti-spam protection using honeypot fields and rate limiting. No CAPTCHAs are required, so the experience stays smooth while keeping spam out.
Can I donate in currencies other than naira?
Yes. Paystack supports payments in USD, GBP, EUR, and CAD in addition to Nigerian Naira. You can select your preferred currency during the payment flow on the Give page or when setting up a sponsorship.
